Columbia Men Inducted into the
Boxing Hall of Fame -Due to the increased number of COVID cases, the Carolina’s
Boxing hall of fame is forced, once again to post pone our banquet until April
22, 2021.
(APR 30) CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Former world champion Joe Frazier and Brent Elmore of
Sumter, S.C., headline the honorees for the annual Carolinas Boxing Hall of Fame
Awards Friday, April 24, here at the Airport Sheraton.
Frazier, whose epic bouts with Ali are among boxing classics, was born outside
of Beaufort, S.C. Elmore, chairman of the hall of fame and an outstanding
amateur boxer, was selected for the Floyd Patterson Award given for outstanding
achievement in boxing.
The hall of fame has inducted many boxing greats since its inception in 1991
including world pro champions Patterson, Ray Mercer, Bonecrusher Smith and
Kelvin Seabrooks along with world amateur champions and Olympians Calvin Brock
and Bernard Taylor, national champions Billy Bridges and
Pappy Gault along with ranked heavyweights James Broad and Neil Wallace.
Other inductees include:
— Henry Nielson of Columbia, S.C., winner of multi Golden Gloves titles and
training innovator.
— Dean Huffstickler, Gastonia. N.C., outstanding amateur and founder of the
Gastonia Police
Boxing Club.
— Sammy Horne, Williamston, S.C., Golden Gloves and AAU champion who became an
outstanding pro fighting on ESPN many times.
— Billy Sharpe, Columbia, S.C., was a driving force in Southern amateur boxing
and president
of USA Boxing for the state for 16 years.
— Michael Cline, Jacksonville, N.C., an all Marine boxer and coach. He founded
the Marine
Boxing Hall of Fame.
— Jay Snyder, Spartanburg, S.C., won 17 of his first 18 pro fights before losing
in a world title fight.
Dr. Anne Edwards, a plastic surgeon from Charleston, S.C., will be awarded a
Lifetime Achievement
Award for her years of work as a ringside physician.
